Maria and the Essence of LoveI once spoke with one of the most wonderful people I've ever had the joy of meeting: Maria. She helped everyone without distinction, expecting nothing in return—just out of joy and a genuine desire to serve. It was from her that I learned a lot about the essence of love.
At one point, tears began to stream down her face. Surprised, I asked why. She replied, her voice breaking: "People are very ungrateful. That's one of the things it takes us a long time to learn in life."
In that moment, I understood. As long as we don't need help, everything seems fine. But when need knocks, we realize who is truly willing to lend a hand.
I didn't need to ask what had happened, because I already knew in part. Most people believe the world exists to serve them. Therefore, they don't feel obligated to give anything back. This ingratitude weighs heavily on those who live under the aegis of unconditional love.
We all come into this world with a mission. However, many forget this purpose and lose themselves in the pursuit of worldly pleasures, forgetting that everything passes, nothing lasts. Temporal existence, when it ends, leaves no trace. But those who remain—those who inherited purposes and values—suffer upon their return, carrying the pain and beauty of having lived with love.
